A report from Public Health Grey Bruce has ignited discussions at Grey County council about updates to the region’s Smoke-Free Municipal Space By-law.
At a recent council meeting, public health spokesperson Alen Hawes highlighted the need for modernization, particularly addressing the rise of commercial tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and hookah lounges.
Hawes raised concerns about the health impacts of hookah lounges and emphasized the limited authority to regulate their use.
He called for stricter rules prohibiting smoking or vaping of any substance in more public spaces, including parks, trails, beaches, and patios.
Council members were cautious about introducing a retail licensing fee for tobacco and vape retailers, questioning the role of the Province and the Board of Health in regulatory efforts. They also discussed enforcement challenges and the importance of ensuring public safety.
Following the discussion, a motion was passed directing staff to prepare a report outlining possible updates to the Smoke-Free Municipal Space By-law.
