Scammers target Wellington County seniors

The Wellington County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are warning residents about recent scams targeting senior citizens in the area.

On March 6, 2025, a senior in the Town of Minto reported receiving a phone call from someone claiming to represent an energy company. The caller offered a seniors' energy rebate and requested a home visit to verify eligibility. Suspicious of the call, the senior contacted their utility provider and confirmed it was a scam.

OPP are also looking for two individuals who passed as representatives from a water company March 21. The suspects offered gift cards in exchange for entry to conduct water quality tests. After the suspects had left, the seniors discovered that prescription medication was missing.

The OPP believe there may be additional victims and are continuing to investigate. Residents with information are urged to contact Wellington County OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or provide anonymous tips to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at www.csgw.tips.

To prevent falling victim to scams, the OPP recommend taking precautions, including verifying identification, refusing to provide personal information, and contacting authorities if a salesperson refuses to leave. For further fraud prevention tips, visit ontario.ca or call the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
