Shorelines cleaned up by youth volunteers

Nine volunteer Coastal Conservation Youth Corps created positive change with the Lake Huron Coastal Centre.

During the week of July 21, 2025 the volunteer crew spent time identifying and removing invasive Buckthorn from areas in the Maitland Trail, Sunset Park and at a lookout location onto Goderich Main Beach.

At the beach, volunteers removed invasive garlic mustard and Himalayan balsam before seed development occurred.

A news release said from there deep-rooted native grasses were planted.

It said it will provide stability, without interfering with the view.

The volunteers attended the Black Point's shoreline where they participated in cleanup, like removing plastic waste and tires.

"The future becomes so much brighter when we care for our coastal environments and these young volunteers showed that to us," said Youth Education Coordinator Kerry Kennedy.

The Lake Huron Coastal Centre is inviting the public to participate in a beach clean up in Bayfield on August 9.

It will be held from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with the meeting spot at the Bayfield Main Beach parking lot.

Anyone interested to participate is encouraged to register online.
