Paediatric emergency training coming to 33 Ontario hospitals

Staff at hospitals across midwestern and southwestern Ontario will receive hands-on training on how to handle complex paediatric emergencies, thanks to a recent donation.

Children's Health Foundation announced on Wednesday that the Paediatric Regional Outreach Program (PROP), delivered through Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, is expanding to reach 33 hospitals throughout the province. This includes healthcare centres in Stratford, Leamington, Woodstock, all the way to Thunder Bay.

Through PROP, doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals will participate in realistic simulations in their own clinical environments for complex scenarios such as status epilepticus – a life-threatening seizure emergency.

“We bring everything needed to recreate real emergencies, often using the hospital’s own equipment,” said Dr. Gurinder Sangha, paediatric emergency physician and simulation program lead at Children’s Hospital. “That approach allows teams to practice in the exact environment where real patients will arrive – making the learning more realistic, and more effective.”

RBC Foundation donated the funds needed to offer the specialized paediatric training to regional hospitals at no extra cost.

“Community hospitals are often the first point of care,” said Sangha. “We want teams to feel confident and prepared when it matters most.”
