Hundreds of traffic and boating charges laid during Canada Day enforcement blitz

The OPP in Midwestern Ontario were kept busy with traffic and boating enforcement during the Canada Day Week enforcement blitz.

The traffic enforcement campaign ran from June 26 until July 5 and highlighted the importance of lifesaving equipment like seatbelts, helmets, and personal flotation devices.

Police also focused education and enforcement efforts on discouraging unsafe driving behaviours, such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving.

Across Midwestern Ontario (by detachment), provincial police laid 209 speeding charges in Huron County, 98 in South Bruce, 92 in Grey-Bruce, 114 in Perth County, and 306 in Wellington County.

Distracted driving charges totalled six in Huron, two each for South Bruce and Grey Bruce, one in Perth, and five in Wellington County. Impaired driving charges in Huron County totalled five, with three in South Bruce, 12 in Grey Bruce, five in Perth and seven in Wellington.

There were also seven personal floatation device charges on the water in Grey Bruce and two in Wellington County. There were 24 seatbelt charges laid in Huron County, with six in Grey Bruce, 25 in Perth and 61 across Wellington County. No helmet charges had to be laid in any region of Midwestern Ontario.

"Safety is everyone's responsibility, whether you are on the roads, the trails or the waterways. By making responsible choices, we can help make our communities safer," a statement from the OPP said.
