OPP detachments across midwestern Ontario are advising families to prepare for a safe Halloween this weekend.
Wellington County OPP are offering some helpful safety reminders to make sure everyone stays safe while enjoying the annual quest for candy.
Media Relations Officer Carly McKeown said trick-or-treaters should always "Be Safe and Be Seen"
"Trick-or-treaters are encouraged to carry a flashlight or wear reflective clothing to stay visible to motorists," McKeown added. "Little ones should always be accompanied by an adult, and should be taught to never enter a stranger's home."
OPP advise children to stay with a group or trusted adult.
"Older children should plan their trick-or-treating route in advance, and ensure a parent or Guardian knows where they will be and when they are expected to return home," McKeown explained. "Walk on the sidewalk whenever possible and always look both ways before crossing the street."
"Parents should inspect candy and discard any unwrapped candy or homemade treats from strangers," McKeown pointed out. "Motorists are reminded to slow down and remain vigilant, especially in residential neighbourhoods where children will be trick-or-treating."
During the excitement of trick-or-treating, children may dart out in front of traffic. Drivers should also be extra careful when entering and exiting driveways.
Meanwhile, Perth County OPP advise motorists to eliminate distractions, use their headlights early to improve visibility at dusk and after dark, and to never drive impaired by alcohol, cannabis, or any other substance.
Huron OPP noted that officers will be providing highly visible patrols throughout Huron County towns and villages to keep things safe on Halloween night.
