Local students gathered on October 23 in Saugeen Shores for a model U.N. event hosted by the Nuclear Innovation Institute.
The event saw students from across the region come together as teams to try and achieve the COP28 goal of working towards tripling global nuclear energy capacity by 2050. Students assumed the roles of global climate action representatives and dealt with issues like energy, land use, and emissions reductions.
Student groups were assigned a nation and had the task of boosting nuclear energy outputs while also managing the needs of their nations. Everyone worked toward the same ultimate goal the world is pursuing: keeping global temperature rise under two degrees.
This year’s first place winners were Addy Stein, Madelaine Pothier, Brooke Maxwell, and Cassidee Wolfe from Grey Highlands Secondary School.
"Congratulations to all of our participants at this year’s Model UN," said Phillip Craig, Director of Education and Outreach at the Nuclear Innovation Institute. "Understanding energy issues is essential for this generation, and I was so proud of how well students represented countries around the world, approaching complex topics with confidence and care."
