Perrie First Alternate for Canada's Pan Am Speed Skating Team

Harriston's Paisley Perrie is a first alternate for Team Canada's speed skating squad at the 2015 Pan Am Games.

Perrie finished 3rd overall at the Pan Am Trials in Toronto Monday night.

Perrie says she finished second in the 200 metre, something she says was a really big accomplishment for her. She finished second in the 500 metre and placed third in the 10 kilometre point event.

"I got third overall and the top two skaters go, so if for any reason the first two qualifiers can't make the Pan Am Games then I would be the next up in line."

Making her results all the more incredible is the fact Perrie took the last year-and-a-half off from speed skating to deal with health issues.

"I was really sick due to breathing problems and I'm super anemic," she says, "so it caused a lot of issues with my skating and I couldn't breath properly and I couldn't perform."

While doctors have been unable to come up with a diagnosis beyond low iron levels, Perrie says she's been able to push through it to resume competing.

In the meantime, Perrie says she's going to focus on the National Championships in August in Quebec City.

"So I'm going to be training hard for those so I can make the junior world team and go to Taiwan (for the World Championships) in November."
