Traffic calming curbs installed in Sarnia

Motorists may have noticed some significant changes to the Indian Road/Errol Road intersection.

The city has installed temporary traffic calming curbs.

Acting Director of Engineering David Jackson said it's a pilot project that was approved by city council in May after the intersection, which has two crossing guards, was identified as a major safety concern because of speeding and vehicles driving around crossing guards.

"The main purpose of this is to improve safety for kids who walk and bike to school," said Jackson. "So putting in these traffic calming curbs shortens the crossing distance, so the kids are crossing live lanes of traffic in less time. It also forces drivers to slow down as they go through there, and narrowing the road will make the crossing guards much more visible to cars driving through."

Jackson said city staff will monitor the area and modify the temporary curbs as required.

At the end of the year, staff will provide recommendations to council for next steps.

Installing the temporary calming curbs cost about $30,000.
