Sarnia parks director, 'it's okay to get out and walk'

A City of Sarnia official says we can get out and go for a walk and still follow pandemic orders and protocols.

Parks and Recreation Director Rob Harwood made the comment during an online community news conference Tuesday.

"Right now, really and truly, people should be leaving their houses and going for walks around the house." said Harwood. "If you live in close proximity to a park, then it's fine to take a walk through the park, we're just discouraging people from driving there and congregating in anyway at those places. So please get out, be fit, be healthy, and we'll all get through this together."

Harwood said park amenities are closed or cordoned off but green spaces are still open and can be accessed provided physical distancing and rules prohibiting groups of more than five people are followed.

"It's okay to get out and walk, and as a matter of fact, as a parks and rec guy, I'm encouraging people to be out and be fit. It's just a matter of not going into high contact areas -- pavilions and benches and playground equipment and things like that. This is a temporary pause."

Harwood said the city has received a lot of messages from residents worried about whether or not they can go into parks.
