Tundra swans arrive in Grand Bend

Hundreds of tundra swans arrived at the Thedford Bog behind the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend Monday.

The museum's education program coordinator, Colleen Inglis, said the majestic birds are visible on both sides of Greenway Road, which is County Rd. #5, just north of the museum.

"The tundra swans come here every year, migrating from Washington all the way up to the Canadian arctic and Alaska," said Inglis. "They come to this area because they like when there's lots of water lying in the fields and they can eat anything that's been left over from last year's crop."

Inglis said the birds usually rest and feed for two or three weeks in the Thedford Bog area.

"There can be tens of thousands on a particular day, when it's a really big swan day. But they do tend to spread themselves out. Sometimes they don't all show up at once, sometimes they'll be here in really large numbers and sometimes they'll be here over a longer period but in small numbers."

Inglis said anyone driving by to see the birds, can stop in and see the exhibit as well.

"We're a bit more low key this year, but we do have a tundra swan exhibit on display at the museum so people can come in and see that and do some tundra swan crafts and activities while they're here."
