With school back in session, Sarnia police are reminding motorists to watch out for students taking the bus, walking or biking to and from class.
Cst. John Sottosanti said it is very dangerous for vehicles to pass school buses that are stopped with their lights and stop signs activated.
"As of this time, police have not received any complaints of school buses that have come to a complete stop and vehicles passing it," said Sottosanti. "We're pretty fortunate to not have those complaints yet, it doesn't mean they won't happen in the future."
Sottosanti said the fine for passing a bus is $490 and six demerit points. He said it's not unusual to have two or three complaints a week during the school year.
"Fortunately, we haven't had any serious injuries pertaining to someone running a school bus but it's only a matter of time if people aren't paying attention."
Police are also reminding motorists to wait until students and crossing guards are back on the sidewalk before travelling through a crosswalk or intersection.
"And school buses are now outfitted with the amber lights that will signal that they are coming to a stop and thus ask the public to slow down and prepare to stop when approaching or coming up from behind a school bus."
Sottosanti is encouraging motorists to drive a little more defensively, especially around the start and end of the school day.
