Sarnia's Salvation Army has had to dip into reserves in order to meet the demand for food and toy hampers this Christmas.
Lieutenant Brad Webster said about 400 families have registered to receive Christmas hampers, which is on par with last year.
The registration deadline was initially set for December 2. However, due to high demand, the deadline was extended to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Registration is being done in person but those with questions can call the Salvation Army at (519) 330-0594.
"Once registration wraps up, we'll be partnering with Local 663 and Scouts Canada again this year. So those who need delivery will be receiving those on Friday, [December] 16th, Local 663 will be taking out the hampers and toy bags to deliver," said Webster. "Then on Saturday, December 17th, we'll have Scouts Canada partnering with us again as well."
On location pick ups at the Salvation Army, located at 970 Confederation St., will take place from December 19 to December 21.
Webster said there is currently enough supply to meet demand but more donations would help.
"We're seeing our food bank levels drop quite a bit. Our donation levels are down quite a bit this year," he said. "However, we have dipped into our reserves and we are making sure that every person who applies here, does leave with both toys and food."
Donations are being accepted at the Salvation Army but new, unwrapped gifts can also be left underneath the Giving Tree at Lambton Mall, behind the information desk.
Webster said totals from their share of the Sarnia Sting's Teddy Bear Toss Game have not been received yet.
