Although Sarnia's Salvation Army is still totalling up donations collected during this year's Red Kettle campaign, the amount has surpassed the goal of $160,000.
Lieutenant Brad Webster said at last check, just over $169,000 had been raised.
Webster said as of December 21, they were several thousand dollars short of meeting the campaign goal. Kettles were out until noon on December 24.
"I wasn't really worried but then when we saw that storm coming in, it kind of put us back a bit," chuckled Webster. "But we were sure that the community would support us as they do every year."
This year's campaign goal was about $20,000 higher than it was in previous years due to more residents seeking help from the Salvation Army.
Webster thanked the volunteers and those who donated toys, food, and money during the holiday season.
"It goes right back into our community and helps those who need the help this time of year," he said. "The kettles, of course, help year-long in all of our programs, right here in our community. Really, it is community, helping community."
Webster said they should know the campaign's final tally by the end of the week.
However, donations to the Salvation Army can still be made online, or by calling or visiting their location during office hours.
