Heat, dry conditions prompt safety message from Sarnia Fire

It's been very hot and dry across the region over the past couple of weeks.

That has prompted Sarnia Fire and Rescue to issue a safety message for residents to avoid sparking an accidental blaze.

Fire Life Safety Educator Mike Otis said one of the most important tips is to properly discard of smoking materials.

"Never flick your cigarettes out of windows or into your gardens, potted plants or anything like that." said Otis. "The City of Toronto had four fires on Wednesday alone that were caused by people throwing their cigarettes off of their balconies."

Otis said cigarette butts should be fully extinguished and kept in a heavy container filled with sand or water and  can't be knocked over.

Meanwhile, crews have been busy dealing with grass fires in recent weeks, including on Thursday afternoon in the area of Highway 40 and Plank Road. There was also smoke and fire trucks in Canatara Park, near Lake Chipican.

We're urged to keep our lawns watered to avoid brush catching fire.
