Ontario marks last free fishing campaign of 2023

Although Canada Day has passed, the occasion is still being celebrated across the province with a free fishing week campaign.

The province is encouraging residents to fish for free until Sunday, July 9.

“To help families celebrate Canada Day, we’re making it easier to get out on the water and experience the world-class fishing opportunities that exist in Ontario,” said Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry Graydon Smith in a statement. “Fishing is a fun and affordable way for families to enjoy quality time, while connecting with nature.”

During the free fishing event, residents will not need to buy a fishing licence but will need to carry a government-issued form of identification (showing a name and date of birth).

This is the last free fishing period in 2023, as previous events were held in February, May, and June.

Veterans and active Canadian Armed Forces members living in Ontario can enjoy free recreational fishing within the province at any time of year.

Catch limits and fishing regulations still apply during free fishing events. Details can be found on the province's website.
