A sweet start to Mackinac weekend

The Rotary Club of Sarnia is once again hosting its annual classic pancake breakfast, part of its Mackinac weekend extravaganza.

The 41st annual breakfast Mackinac Pancake Breakfast is on from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. under the Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward.

Spokesperson Carolyn Leaver-Luciani said this year they're taking a greener approach and asking attendees to bring their own cutlery and plates.

"We do have water, however we're not using water bottles so we ask that you bring your own water container and then we have big jugs that you can fill your water with," said Leaver-Luciani. "And we don't have little packages of syrup anymore, we have great big jugs that we pump. We are trying to reduce landfill."

Cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children. Advance tickets are available at the Inn of the Good Shepherd, Pathways, Degroot's Nurseries and Manley's Basics.

Leaver-Luciani said money raised from the breakfast stays in the community.

"So the Rotary supports a lot of local initiatives like Pathways Health Centre for Children," she said. "We've been doing a lot of micro-grants, where people apply and then we give out up to $5,000, so there's all kinds of places that money has been going to. If people want to apply, they can go on to our Facebook page or the Rotary Club of Sarnia website and put in an application for funds."

The event coincides with the 99th running of the Bayview Mackinac Boat Race, with the first boats crossing the starting line at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, just north of the Blue Water Bridge.

And while you're in the Point Edward area Saturday, residents may also notice a number of military vehicles and personnel.

The Canadian Army Reserve personnel from 31 Canadian Brigade Group-The 1st Hussars, will host a military equipment display near the Blue Water Bridge off of Venetian Boulevard.

They're arriving from London Saturday morning and residents may see military vehicles on area highways including the 402 and Highway 40 as well as several city streets like Exmouth, Russell, and Capel streets. Vehicles will consist of armoured vehicles and troop carrying trucks.

All measures are being taken to ensure minimum inconvenience to those in the area.

The display at Venetian Blvd. will be open to the public from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m.
