Tornado touches down in Petrolia, microbursts confirmed regionally

It's now official.

A tornado touched down in Petrolia last Thursday afternoon, and the severe weather also spawned four microbursts across the region.

Western University's Northern Tornadoes Project (NTP) said an EF0 twister started in the hard oil town at around 4:25 p.m.

The team conducted a ground and drone survey on Friday, documenting damage to a barn roof, trees, a power pole and crops.

The NTP said the tornado had an estimated maximum wind speed of 115 km/h, a track length of 2.91 kilometres and maximum path width of 300 metres. The tornado motion was from the west southwest at around 255 degrees.

Meanwhile, microbursts are confirmed to have made their way through Point Edward-Sarnia, Alvinston, Wardsville, and Wilkesport.

Tree damage was reported in Point Edward and Sarnia, and west of the St. Clair River in Port Huron, MI.

An NTP ground and drone survey was conducted on Saturday, documenting the reported damage along with minor roof damage to homes.

Damage on Canadian soil was assessed as an EF0 downburst, with an estimated maximum wind speed of 125 km/h.

In Alvinston, damage was done to farm equipment, grain elevators and a construction trailer, as well as trees, a power pole and an antenna.

The NTP's assessment confirmed an EF0 downburst, with an estimated maximum wind speed of 115 km/h.

In Wilkesport, east of Sombra, there was damage done to a large machine shed and trees, along with another farm property.

Damage assessed as EF0 downburst (microburst), with an estimated maximum wind speed of 130 km/h.

There was minor roof damage to a home and damage to crops and trees southeast of Wardsville, in Southwest Middlesex.

The NTP's investigation concluded there was an EF0 downburst (microburst), with an estimated maximum wind speed of 125 km/h.

The NTP said no injuries were reported across the region.

An EF1 tornado was also confirmed in South Buxton, in the municipality of Chatham-Kent.
