A march initially scheduled to take place in downtown Sarnia on Thursday morning, ahead of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, has been cancelled.
Sarnia-Lambton Native Friendship Centre Executive Director Donna Smith-Sutherland said participants were asked to meet at the Lochiel Street centre at 9:30 a.m., with the march set to begin at 10 a.m. to the Seaway Centre Parkette.
*Sarnia News Today was advised late Wednesday afternoon that the Every Child Matters March on September 28 was cancelled "due to unforeseen circumstances."
Smith-Sutherland previously said the Every Child Matters March is a chance for the community and allies to come together to acknowledge the day and raise awareness.
"That's really what is important," said Sutherland. "So that people really understand that there are so many issues historically that have impacted Indigenous people, regardless of whether we're living in the city or whether we're living on reserves we are still impacted, we are still living with that traumatic event, that time in Canada's history."
An honour walk planned for Saturday at Kettle and Stony Point, to mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, has been postponed.
Members of the First Nation said in a Facebook post on Thursday that the event was being delayed due to a death in the community.
An alternate date and time for the walk from Hillside School to the Veterans Memorial Monument is still being determined.
