Low lying areas flooding with more rain on the way

Flooding will continue to be an issue in low lying areas across the St. Clair Region Conservation Authority watershed.

The conservation authority upgraded a flood watch to a flood warning for the region on Saturday night. It comes as another 5 to 10 millimetres of rain is expected to fall overnight into Sunday. That rainfall will add to already elevated water levels across the region and continue to flood low lying areas.

"Water levels continue to rise in the lower reaches of the watershed with water levels expected to peak overnight," the conservation authority said in a statement.

Flooding continues to keep the following four roads closed:

· Stanley Line between Kimball Road and Waubuno Road

· Plowing Match Road between Rokeby Line and Petrolia Line

· Black Ash Road between Durham Creek Line and Rokeby Line

· Gypsie Flats Road between Durham Creek Line and Rokeby Line

The roads were initially closed on Friday and remained that way throughout the day on Saturday. There is no indication when water will recede enough to reopen them to traffic.

Additionally, the conservation authority is reminding people to stay away from waterways as the elevated levels are making for dangerous conditions, including slippery banks and cold, swift moving water. Children and pets should be kept away for the time being.

"The Conservation Authority continues to monitor watershed conditions and will issue advisories to municipalities and media should flood issues arise. Municipal emergency response staff and road superintendents should monitor local conditions closely," the conservation authority concluded.

The flood warning is expected to remain in effect until Monday.
