A six-foot-tall illuminated "Sarnia" letter sign is expected to be installed by the waterfront at Centennial Park this week, depending on the weather.
City council approved an updated letter design by Spectra Advertising in July 2022.
The sign will be installed in the park, north of the flagpole plaza, with the Sarnia Bay and Andrew S. Brandt Marina in the background.
General Manager of Engineering and Operations David Jackson said the project has been a long time coming.
"We're excited to see the final installation happen," he said.
The sign ties in with the Waterfront Master Plan which identified the need to create a unique feature and nighttime experience for residents and tourists to enjoy and promote the city through photos.
Jackson said city staff will receive a tutorial from the contractor on how the lighting functions.
"We are looking at our illumination policy the city has for how people could make requests for what colours are lit up," he said. "We do have a policy in place for the city hall facility where the lights can be changed so we're looking at options, do we just link it to that or does it have its own separate policy? We're exploring those options right now."
Jackson said the project is on budget at about $132,000. It was supported by a $55,000 community grant from Imperial Oil.
