Resemblances between Blue Water Bridge and Baltimore bridge are 'superficial', FBCL says

The Federal Bridge Corporation [FBCL], which operates and manages the Blue Water Bridge [BWB] in Point Edward, is reacting to the collapse of a bridge in Baltimore on Tuesday.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge fell into the river below, seconds after one of its columns was struck by a large cargo ship at around 1:30 a.m.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, FBCL Senior Communications Specialist Alexandre Gauthier said they "understand the concerns such events can raise among both the public and professionals" in their industry.

"Firstly, our thoughts are with all affected by the Baltimore bridge incident," Gauthier said. "Safety is a paramount concern for the Federal Bridge Corporation Limited, and incidents like these are a sobering reminder of the importance of the stringent safety measures we have in place."

Gauthier called resemblances between our local bridge and the Baltimore span "superficial."

"There are significant structural differences," he said. "Notably, the Blue Water Bridge's design includes piers that are positioned on land rather than in the water, which inherently minimizes the likelihood of an impact from vessels."

Gauthier said the safety and security of the BWB is supported by constant monitoring and regular maintenance to ensure its integrity.

"Our infrastructure is held to the highest standards of safety, and we continuously invest in its upkeep and improvement to provide safe and reliable passage for our users," he said.

The original BWB span received significant improvements to enhance its structural integrity in 2023, and the newer span will receive attention this year.

Construction will see the eastbound bridge close between May 29 and October.
