Sarnia cheer team aims to 'make a splash' at worlds

Tidal Wave, a cheerleading squad from Sarnia, will hit the world stage this weekend in Orlando, Florida.

The team from Bluewater Cheer Athletics will compete at The Cheerleading Worlds championship at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort on Saturday at 6:25 p.m.

Megan Loucks, 28, is a coach at Bluewater Cheer Athletics and a member of the competing Tidal Wave team.

"Our routine is 2.5 minutes. It is jam-packed from start to end with jumps, tumbling, motions and choreography, and of course, stunts," she said.

Tidal Wave consists of 22 athletes with alternates, Loucks said 19 will step onto the floor.

She said Tidal Wave is in an open-aged division so members range from 15 years old and up.

"This year, the team has been together in training since June 2023. A lot of the athletes on the team trained on the team last year and performed at worlds," Loucks said. "Many of these athletes have been kids in the gym since they were six or seven years old and have been training their entire cheerleading career in hopes of coming to the cheerleading worlds."

Loucks said this is their second year attending the international championship as a Bluewater Cheerleading program.

The team arrived in the 'sunshine state' on April 24 and spent time practicing and watching other teams.

"We have been having a really great time," she said.

Over 500 teams will compete in Florida, representing 21 countries.

The championship officially began Friday and will run until Monday, April 29.

Loucks said most members will travel back home on Tuesday.
