Teen photo contest explores beauty of Lambton

Aspiring young artists are being encouraged to capture the essence of Lambton County as part of this year's teen photo contest, organized by Lambton County Library and the Judith & Norman Alix Art Gallery (JNAAG). The theme for this year's campaign, "Lambton through the Lens," falls in line with the county's 175th anniversary.

Public Services Coordinator of Youth Programs and Outreach Vanitia Campbell said the theme does not mean the subject matter has to be focused on well-known landmarks, like the Blue Water Bridge. "What is iconic in that particular community? It might be a tree that everybody uses as a way marker when they're giving directions or a well-worn pathway," Campbell said. "We really want to get a nice comprehensive view of what makes up Lambton County."

The contest includes three categories: local icons, abstract, and romance of ruin (including old structures or weathered objects).

The teen photo contest is open to those between the ages of 13 and 18 who live in Lambton County.

Participants can submit up to five photos online until July 7.

Campbell's advice to participants is to take their time. "Really be very intentional about what you're choosing for a subject and then take photos at different times of day, take photos at different times of year to find the one that really stands out," she said.

Campbell said this is a great opportunity for those who may be considering pursuing photography as a career. "It can be a nice thing to put in a portfolio or on a resume that you were selected as part of a jury," she said.

The grand prize winner will receive their choice of $100 to Mainframe in Sarnia, $100 to Carmen’s Foto Source, or a virtual one-hour one-on-one session with award-winning photographer Peter Power. The grand prize winner and three category winners will be announced on July 19.

A panel of industry experts will also select 25 photos to be featured at the downtown Sarnia art gallery from August 2 to October 12, alongside works by Canadian photographer Jane Hinton.

"Those exhibits are really great and well done and they are done to the same level as any of the other art exhibits that are in that building so it's a really excellent way to get your artwork displayed and out there," said Campbell.

Once the exhibit ends in October, the four winners will have their photos professionally matted and framed.

Campbell said there are virtual courses available through the library for teens who are interested in participating in the contest. Workshops will also be held at the JNAAG on May 26, June 6, and from July 2 to July 4.
