Sydenham River Canoe and Kayak Race celebrates 50 years

Paddlers will gather at the Sydenham River on Sunday, April 28 for the 50th Annual Canoe and Kayak Race.

The race features eleven classes and three different race lengths for both competitive and recreational attendees.

The starting line is located on Mosside Line just west of County Road 79 in Dawn-Euphemia.

All classes and race lengths end at the Shetland Conservation Area located off Bentpath Line.

Seven kilometre classes include recreation, lazy river, VIP, touring for those 50 years and older, and short kayak.

There are also 12 kilometre race classes which have rec tandem men, rec tandem mixed and long rec kayak.

Lastly there are 16 kilometer race classes which are pro c2 men, pro c2 mixed and fast kayak.

St. Clair Region Conservation Authority Communications Manager Donna Blue said this event serves as a fundraiser.

"We encourage all participants to go out and get pledges for their efforts and any money raised goes directly to support our conservation education program," she said.

Over the last few years the event has had to be cancelled because of significant rainfall and other weather events.

Blue said this year there will be a rain date for May 5.

"With some of the rain and the water levels just getting so high, we've had to cancel but it was a suggestion made over the last couple of years, so we were able to organize it and get everyone on board for it this year," she said.

According to Blue, the event normally sees between 70 to 100 participants.

"We get everything from competitive paddlers who are a part of the OMCRA (Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association) organizations but then we also get families out with their kids and just people looking for a nice day out on the river," she said.

Trophies will also be presented to the winners of each race.

Participants are required to bring their own canoe or kayak equipped with a whistle, bailer and 50 feet of rope. Approved personal flotation devices or life jackets must be worn by each paddler.

Registration cost is $10 per person and there will be a shuttle starting at 10 a.m. to take participants to the starting line.

Online registration for the event ends on Wednesday.

Paddlers will be able to register at the event but it will be cash only.
