Rocky the snake clean up planned Sunday

Volunteers will gather just north of the Blue Water Bridge on Sunday to clean up Rocky the rock snake.

Wendy Marsden, who started the public display, said it held up really well over the winter.

"A lot of the rocks just got turned over, we'll take those and just turn them back over, but the ones that didn't weather so well... we're going to pick them up and have a painting area," Marsden said.

She said you don't need to bring anything because paint, clear coat, and paint brushes have been donated.

"We're going to have hot dogs, we're going to have juice boxes, water, treats for the kids. I've hired a woman to do tattoos for two hours for the kids. It's just going to be a fun day," she said.

Marsden said they plan to form Rocky back into a snake on Sunday and hope he stays that way so they can attempt breaking a record in the fall.

"There's over 11,000 [rocks] right now. The Guinness Book of World Records has 23,000. We'll make that this summer. There is no doubt in my mind," Marsden said.

Marsden said the clean up will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The cost to winterize the display, estimated at $18,000 last fall, was too expensive for officials to approve.

Community members were encouraged to pick up their stones for the winter, put a finish on them to preserve them, or check on them in the spring.
