About 1,000 workers expected for Shell turnaround

Shell is gearing up for its fall turnaround at the Sarnia Manufacturing Centre (SMC) in Corunna.

Scheduled maintenance at the St. Clair Parkway site is slated to begin in early September.

Shell said the turnaround will allow for the necessary repairs and upgrades for continued safe and reliable operation of the facility.

A peak workforce of about 1,000 contractors and employees will be on site during the turnaround, resulting in millions of dollars injected into the local economy for materials, pre-fabricated equipment, staffing and more.

In an email to Sarnia News Today, Shell Downstream Corporate Relations Lead Stephen Velthuizen said area residents may notice increased activity, traffic and flaring while work is completed.

“We know there are impacts such as elevated flaring when we shutdown and start up units and increased traffic,” Velthuizen. “We have put mitigations in place to minimize these impacts and we appreciate the patience of the community as we invest in the facility to keep it running safely.”

Shell said all safety precautions and standard regulatory protocols will be followed.
