Annual Torch Run supports Special Olympics athletes

Members of the Sarnia Police Service are doing their part to cheer on local Special Olympics athletes ahead of their summer events.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run will be held on Friday, June 5.

SPS said it's an event they look forward to every year.

"Each year, community members line the streets to cheer on the athletes," said SPS in a social media post. "If you would like to cheer us on, the run will commence at 10:30 a.m. from the parking lot by the splash pad under the bridge in Point Edward, head eastbound on Michigan Ave, south on Colborne Rd, and west on Errol Rd, ending at the courthouse."

Minor traffic delays in the area are to be expected while the run takes place.

Other participating agencies include Lambton OPP, Canada Border Services Agency, Correctional Services, Probation and Parole offices.

The mission of the Ontario Law Enforcement Torch Run is to help grow an inclusive and accepting community for people with intellectual disabilities.

According to its website, the Law Enforcement Torch run is the largest public awareness vehicle and grass-roots fundraiser for Special Olympics.

"Known honourably as Guardians of the Flame, law enforcement members and Special Olympics athletes carry the “Flame of Hope”, into the Opening Ceremony of local competitions, and into Special Olympics Provincial, National, Regional and World Games."
