Local Shipping Activity Quiet, For Now

Shipping activity has been rather quiet on the St. Clair River and lower Lake Huron this weekend.

Canadian Coast Guard ice breakers have been busy in southern Lake Erie.

CCG spokesperson Carol Launderville says the Samuel Risley and Griffon assisted the S.S. Arthur M. Anderson Saturday.

The ship had been trapped in the ice near Conneaut Harbor, Ohio, about 75 km northeast of Cleveland, since Tuesday.

Launderville says the Samuel Risley was escorting the Anderson to the Detroit area Sunday, which could take over a day depending on the ice conditions.

She says the Griffon had moved on to assist an oil tanker traveling from Nanticoke on the north shore of Lake Erie towards Windsor.

Launderville says local boat watchers can expect to see the Samuel Risley return to Sarnia-Lambton early this week when it takes over that escort and assists the oil tanker up bound on the St. Clair River to Sarnia's refinery fuel docks.
