The provincial government Tuesday passed new legislation to increase the penalties for using a hand held phone while driving.

Fines for distracted drivers will increase from $60 to $500 to now between $300 and $1,000 plus three demerit points .

Statistics now show that distracted driving, such as talking on your cell phone, has surpassed drunk driving as the number one cause in collisions and roadway fatalities.
