Sarnia Police Overtime Exceeds Budget

Sarnia Police Services is working with a reduced complement due to officer sickness and injuries.

Police Chief Phil Nelson says the service is about $26,000 over budget in having to compensate with officer overtime.

"I've been the chief since 2009, I have never seen a full complement of 111 officers," he says. "This year in particular, the amount of officers that are being injured in the line of duty, and some off duty, is just unbelievable."

Nelson says the service has been working to get people back to work as soon as possible from injury and sickness.

"When you start losing your officers it cuts into your ability to do a lot of initiatives," he adds.

Nelson says despite losing officers, they're still out patrolling the streets and keeping up with other initiatives.

Sarnia Police Services has dealt with a reduced complement through paying officer overtime.
