Safety Concerns At Gas Power Plant Site

A long list of worker safety problems at the $360-million gas-fired generating plant under construction in St. Clair Township.

Ontario Ministry of Labour spokesperson William Lin says investigators have been on site on 60 different occasions to conduct proactive and reactive inspections.

Lin says of the 192 orders issued since April 2013, all but four have been met.

Some of the orders were issued due to problems ranging from live electrical panels with no covers to sub-standard scaffolding to inadequate ventilation.

Lin says the Ministry is aware of two workplace injuries. One worker injured their wrist last December while another received an electric shock in an incident on April 2.

Just a couple of months ago, a vertical support beam gave way inside the plant, dropping the floor onto the foundation with 100 tons of force, sending dozens of workers running for safety.

The 300 megawatt Eastern Power facility is being built on Oil Springs Line near the former LGS site.
