ATV Rule Changes On The Way

Beginning July 1, Ontario is expanding the number of ATVs allowed to operate on the shoulder of public roads.

They're allowing the use of 'two up' ATVs, side-by-side ATVs and utility terrain vehicles.

Previously, only single-rider ATVs could operate on certain provincial and municipal highways.

Lambton OPP Traffic and Marine Supervisor Tim Ives says they'll be required to have a slow moving vehicle sign and can't exceed 40 km/h.

The province is also reinforcing the use of helmets on roadways. The only place wearing a helmet isn't required is on your own property.

Ives says the new legislation will especially benefit farmers who can now take someone with them while transporting equipment.
