Future Of Jackson Pool Up For Discussion

The future of Jackson Pool on East St. could become more clear following a public input meeting Thursday night.

City staff is holding a session on Thursday, November 2 at 6pm in council chambers.

Parks and Rec Director Rob Harwood says options include restoring the pool to its former state or establishing a community gathering place.

He says a gathering place would be usable all year long.

"It would be a spray pad concept," says Harwood. "It'll still be a cooling centre for kids, as well as the opportunity to be used by the Strangway Centre for outdoor events or potentially work along with the wedding arbour at Germain park, or firehall use. So, we're just looking at a way to make more use of that space."

Harwood says they hope to have a final proposal to council ahead of 2018 budget talks in December.

Meantime, nearly 2,000 people are calling on Sarnia council to rebuild Jackson Pool by next summer.

A petition with over 1,500 hand written signatures and the names of a few hundred more who signed a petition online was presented to council Monday.

Council decided last April to temporarily close the 4 ft by 82 ft in-ground pool after staff reported that the pool, built in 1966, was in need of major improvements.
