The Ojibway legend of Mookibii is now permanently on display at Maawn Doosh Gumig, Aamjiwnaang First Nation Community Centre.
The large, colourful, acrylic painting was unveiled at a special ceremony Friday morning.
Aamjiwnaang artist John Williams says his grandmother used to tell him the water story.
"What it is, is the exchange of medicine from the mermaids to our people," says Williams. "So, I included things like drumming and smudge for the mermaid, for their exchange, for their time together. These are traditional things."
The painting, which also includes the hand prints of about 150 community members, was commissioned as part of the "Great Art for Great Lakes" projects to celebrate Canada's 150th birthday.
