Leave your pot at home

With the legalization of marijuana in Canada just a couple of days away, cross-border travellers are being reminded of the laws in the U.S.

The sale, possession, production and distribution of marijuana will remain illegal under U.S Federal Law.

Sarnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu said residents travelling across the Blue Water Bridge beginning October 17, may want to treat it as though nothing has changed.

"That would be very good advice for people," said Gladu. "I'm looking forward to having the feedback from people that have crossed over if they're starting to be asked different questions like 'have you consumed marijuana?' If the answer is yes, you won't be allowed into the U.S. Obviously we need to be honest with the border officials, but I'm interested to hear feedback from people if they have had issues crossing."

Gladu said cross-border travellers may also notice some increased security.

"The Homeland Security folks have told us that at the Blue Water Bridge they'll be using drug dogs, so if there's any scent in the car, they will pull you over into inspection," said Gladu. "They've said there may be an increase in wait times, we'll have to see how that goes. But certainly, people should not be bringing marijuana products into the United States at this point."

U.S Customs and Border Protection announced last week that individuals working in the cannabis industry will generally be allowed in for travel unrelated to the marijuana industry. However, if they're found to be heading to the U.S for a reason related to the marijuana industry, they may be deemed inadmissible.
