Sarnia firefighters handle heavy machinery calls

Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded to two calls involving heavy machinery on Wednesday.

A front-end loader flipped onto its side on London Line near DeGroot's Nurseries, at mid-afternoon, trapping the driver inside.

The machine was leaking diesel and black smoke was pouring out. The driver was extricated, and transported to Bluewater Health with non-life threatening injuries.

Public Education Officer Mike Otis said at around 7 p.m. they responded to a report of a fire at an industrial shop on Lougar Ave.

"We quickly extinguished the fire and prevented it from spreading to the rest of the building," he said. "After crews extinguished the fire and ventilated the building, the machine shop was actually able to stay in business."

Otis said damage was estimated at around $50,000, and the cause was overheated machinery.

Sarnia Fire and Rescue reminds everyone to know their fire escape plans at the office and at home.
