There was a release of anhydrous ammonia from the CF Industries plant in St. Clair Township late Tuesday afternoon.
St. Clair Township Fire Chief Walt Anderson said they responded to the Bickford Line Nitrogen complex near Courtright at about 4:35 p.m.
"We responded to a Community Awareness Emergency Response (CAER) Code 9 which is just a call for municipal fire to a gas release at CF Industries in the urea unit," said Anderson. "It was a short release as they were shutting down the unit. They quickly isolated it, it's dispersed. When we arrived they gave us all of the readings from the gas monitors in the area. We determined that there was no off-site impact."
Chief Anderson said they were in the process of verifying, for the third time, that everyone was accounted for at the assembly points, and there were no injuries.
St. Clair Township fire responded with 30 firefighters from three stations.
In a news release, CF Industries confirmed there was an ammonia release from its Courtright facility at about 4:20 p.m.
"The incident was contained, there was no off-site impact and all employees have been safely accounted for," said Director of Corporate Communications Chris Close.
