Catch The Ace draws big crowd for big bucks

Someone could walk home with nearly $22,000 if they win the upcoming Catch The Ace draw on Thursday night.

The local Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62 of Sarnia is hosting their third draw since 2017, and so far though 38 weeks, nobody has found the ace of spades.

Legion spokesman Les Jones said as the pot grows, so do the lineups for tickets.

"Now we're at the point where we can only sell 981 tickets per night. So now people are coming early so they can ensure that they'll get a ticket," said Jones.

Each draw is held Thursday night at the Sarnia Legion at 286 Front St N., and tickets can be purchased between 5 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. before each draw.

Jones said they've already raised thousands of dollars through the popular draw, and most of it goes towards local causes.

"So the money goes into our lottery fund and we use that mainly to give back to the community," said Jones. "We give to organizations such as Pathways, we gave $10,000 last year for upgrades to the Sarnia Arena, we just gave cheques out to Inn of the Good Shepherd, St. Vincent de Paul and the Salvation Army at Christmas."

Jones said the draws have had several other benefits.

"It has helped expose the Legion and what we do and what we're about to a lot more people that normally wouldn't have come to the Legion," said Jones.

Jones said each draw has been a huge success -- the first one went 17 weeks and the second finally finished in week 51.
