Police arrest two impaired drivers over the weekend

Sarnia police are reminding motorists of the dangers of impaired driving after two incidents over the weekend.

Around 9 p.m Sunday, a witness saw a vehicle swerving on southbound Murphy Road without its headlights on and struck a parked vehicle and fled. Police said the vehicle then pulled into a gas station where an officer arrested the female driver.

A breath sample indicated the 56-year-old Sarnia woman was twice over the legal limit.

Cst. John Sottosanti said a Sarnia man, 22, was charged after a traffic stop around 3 a.m Saturday on College Avenue. Police said he was also twice the legal limit.

"Unfortunately the Sarnia police has had to deal with two impaired drivers already this year, said Sottosanti. "Sarnia police would like to remind the public that drinking and driving or taking drugs and driving are offences with very serious consequences, not just financially but with the lives that are affected."

As of December 19, 2018, legal blood alcohol content for drivers is 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.

Police are also able to administer a mandatory roadside screening test to any driver at any time.
