UPDATE: Mystery odour causes school closure

A suspicious odour caused a brief closure of St. Peter Canisius Catholic school in Watford Monday morning.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board says students were temporarily housed at the local arena while officials from the Watford Fire Service, Union Gas and Coral Canada Wide, the board's HVAC contractor, inspected the building.

The all-clear was sounded at 9:30 a.m. and students returned to the school.

After a thorough inspection of all natural gas sources, the board says it was determined there was no gas leak.

It's believed the odour may have been caused by an unknown source outside the building, and given the wind direction, vented in through a rooftop unit over the office and library.

Union Gas and Coral Canada Wide will conduct a second inspection later in the day, as a precaution.

St. Peter Canisius Catholic School Principal Christine Lambert thanked all involved for the quick response.

"I also want to thank our students and staff who reacted quickly and appropriately in the situation," said Lambert. "Safety is always our number one priority."
