Sarnia's chapter of Women's March Canada organized its first rally for Saturday, January 19, joining others around the world to promote equality.
An estimated 500 people braved snow and cold temperatures for the event that began at noon Saturday at the former Sears parking lot at Lambton Mall.
Coordinator Angela Pettit said the purpose was to raise awareness about issues facing women.
"The theme this year is ending violence against women, and Canada chapters are focusing on the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women," said Pettit. "So we're hoping to bring awareness to women's rights and support women's equality, human rights, healthcare reform, and reproductive rights."
There were guest speakers at a pre-march rally and then a march along a route scaled back due to the weather.
