Tunes for Tyler fundraiser

The Wyoming's Lions Club will be rocking Saturday night in support of a local teen born without the use of his legs.

Tyler Verbeek, 18, suffers from a severe form of spina bifida and has gone through at least 34 surgeries over his life -- one of the surgeries also led to him losing his hearing.

Tyler's mother Teresa organized a community gathering Saturday, called Tunes for Tyler, to help pay for his medical expenses, which include a bed with a price-tag of roughly $12,000.

Teresa said all are welcome to attend the event in support of this amazing teen.

She said despite everything that's happened over the course of Tyler's life, nothing has stopped him.

"He's a stubborn red-head and he is doing a lot of things doctors told me he would never do," said Teresa. "He's an avid swimmer, he enjoys anything animals, and it's his goal to finish school and take some courses on caring for animals.

"He's that typical 18-year-old -- hanging out with his friends, video games, movies; Deadpool is one of his favourites. And he's one of those kids that actually loves school -- he goes to Robarts School for the Deaf in London."

Teresa said Tyler hasn't been able to swim over the past year because of his bed soars, but she said with the right treatment, he could soon be back in the pool again.

The Wyoming-mother started a GoFundMe campaign to help pay for Tyler's medical expenses.

She said they're hoping Saturday night's event can help them reach their $7,500 goal.

"We are doing a silent auction, so anybody that would like to donate to the auction, that's helpful. But realistically, just come out and enjoy the fun," said Teresa. "There's alcohol, we're running some games, and because it's open mic, we got some wonderful entertainment."

The event goes from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Lions Club at 554 Main St.

Tickets are $5 in advance and $8 at the door. For more information, click here.
