Golf course project expected to draw a crowd at city hall

The controversial redevelopment of the former Crabbies Golf Course into residential housing will be discussed by city council Monday.

The Bright's Grove Golf Club has proposed an active residential community on the northern portion of the golf course between the south extension of Estella, Robert and James Streets and Lakeshore Road.

Staff are recommending council defer the rezoning, draft subdivision and condominium applications until a revised report addressing stormwater management concerns is submitted.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley says it's unfortunate over a dozen people are coming to speak to the project Monday, and a decision may not be made.

"With this latest recommendation, a lot of people are going to come out, and if council adopts the servicing report direction, they're going to have to come back out again in a number of months when it comes back to council," said Bradley.

Many of the speakers Monday have traffic concerns about the project.

They want a road that would connect the subdivision to Lakeshore Road.

Representatives from the home builders association, real estate board, and chamber of commerce are also on the agenda and are concerned the road would require costly environmental assessments, further delaying the project.

Over 70 units -- single detached homes and condominiums -- and a nine-hole golf course are planned.
