With warmer weather finally upon us, we're being urged to call and find out the location of underground utilities before doing any digging for spring projects.
Ontario One Call spokesman Ian Simpson said there were 5,000 incidents of pipes or cables being damaged in Ontario in 2018. He said that cost the province about $660-million. "There's a huge financial burden that happens when people dig without contacting Ontario One Call," said Simpson. "If you hit an underground cable or pipe, it can cost thousands of dollars and put out services in your neighbourhood and within your own household as well." Simpson said homeowners are fully liable for damage to underground infrastructure. Contractors can be charged and fined under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
