Guns, drugs seized in Sarnia traffic stop

Sarnia police seized guns and $25,000 worth of drugs in the Devine Street area on Thursday afternoon.

Vice Unit officers, conducting surveillance of a suspect as part of an ongoing investigation, watched a vehicle making a number of quick stops during which drug transactions were allegedly taking place.

Constable John Sottosanti said the vehicle was stopped at 3:12 p.m.

"While approaching the vehicle officers observed the suspect, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, pull what appeared to be a handgun from his waistband and throw it to the ground inside the vehicle," said Sottosanti. "In total there were four occupants in the vehicle which were all arrested. As a result of a search, officers located over half a pound of crack and of cocaine."

Police said they also recovered a loaded 40 calibre semi-automatic handgun from the vehicle floor, and a replica handgun allegedly tucked in the driver's waistband.

Isaiah Norlyn Simmons, 24, of the Greater Toronto Area faces a charge of possession for the purpose of trafficking, as well as ten firearm and weapon-related charges.

The driver of the vehicle, Justin Alexander Elpani, 24, of Sarnia is charged with trafficking, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a weapon.

Two other Sarnians, Michelle Anne Poirier, 31, and Adam Joseph Renaud, 45, are both charged with drug trafficking.

All four were being held pending bail hearings.
