Group looks to commemorate Wanstead train wreck of 1902

The Plympton-Wyoming Historical Society wants to honour the victims of the Wanstead train wreck of 1902. The group has asked town council for financial support for a memorial plaque. Member Bill Munro, who is spearheading the initiative, said it's a fitting tribute that's long overdue. "This was a significant event in December 1902. There was 29 people killed and several dozen injured, and it's almost gone and lost to the ages, as they would say. You talk to some people and they had never heard of it."

Munro said while council was receptive to the idea, they have yet to formerly approve the project -- he expects they'll make a decision by the end of January.

He said the cost of the plaque would likely be between $9,000 and $10,000.
