Distressed dogs removed from Lambton County farm

A dozen dogs, allegedly being kept in vehicles, were removed from a Lambton County farm Sunday.

Sarnia police Cst. John Sottosanti said they were contacted by a concerned citizen and responded to a property in the area of Churchill Line and Mandaumin Road at mid-afternoon.

He said the animals were surrendered and are now in the care of the Sarnia and District Humane Society.

Executive Director Donna Pyette said the dogs, ranging in age from six weeks to five years old, were found living in extremely poor conditions and in distress.

"The police had made the decision that it was to be an immediate removal for the wellbeing of the animals, and so we took the 12 dogs into our capacity," said Pyette. "There was definitely some medical concerns when they came into our care. They're doing much better now, and are under vet care."

She said the dogs will stay under their care for two to three weeks.

"Once they're healthy enough and they've been properly assessed and properly taken care of, we will be placing them up for adoption."

Since the Ontario government took over investigations on animal cruelty and neglect, Pyette said they rarely receive calls for assistance.

Cst. Sottosanti said because the dogs were surrendered, no charges will be laid.
