Sarnia police say online car buyers defrauded

Sarnia police are reminding residents not to purchase items sight unseen after several victims were defrauded over the weekend.

Police said an online ad was placed on Kijiji for a 1971 Datsun 240Z, with a shot engine, with an asking price of $5,000.

Multiple victims, from the GTA, responded and agreed to put down a deposit via e-transfer to hold the vehicle.

Police said the victims then agreed to meet the scam artist at a Mitton Street address to complete the transaction, but nobody ever showed and the money was gone.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-344-8861 ext. 6226, or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
