Lambton MOH says vaccine trials provide reason for optimism

Lambton's medical officer of health says the latest news about COVID-19 vaccine trials provides reason for optimism.

Dr. Sudit Ranade said updates from two companies are encouraging but we have to remain patient.

"We have to go through the whole process, finish their trials and all that stuff, but the early indicators on two different vaccines suggest a greater than 90 per cent efficacy of those vaccines, so that's a huge reason to be hopeful," said Ranade. "This gives us a light at the end of the tunnel but the tunnel is not short. We're still looking at early next year by the time that we can get all of this done and manufactured, so I think the point is, it [the pandemic] isn't going to last forever."

Moderna said Monday its vaccine candidate appears to be 94.5 per cent effective, and last week Pfizer made a similar promising announcement about its vaccine.

Dr. Ranade said Sarnia-Lambton residents have been amazing and have really taken the pandemic seriously and we have to continue to follow pandemic protocols.

Lambton Public Health reported another confirmed case of COVID-19 Monday and another resolved case, leaving the number of active cases at nine.

Since March 25, 353 of the 387 confirmed cases have been resolved and the death toll has remained unchanged at 25 since June 6.

There are no outbreaks currently but there is still a case linked to Riverview Central School in Port Lambton.

Bluewater Health is reporting one positive patient in hospital.
